Anyone out there? Not much activity on this forum. I have the test software and would like to find out if anyone else finds the questions as difficult as I do. The questions on the free websites I have tried are easier. Has anyone else had this same experience?|srchr111|2008-1-13

Same here. I listened to it for several weeks on my 1.5 hour morning commute in Northern Virginia to DC, and it certainly helped me gain a verbal technical advantage in the interview that got me my current Sr. Software Engineer job with a defense contractor. Thanks, Prof!|eMutant17|2007-12-12

In the Art of War is written: Man's inherent egoism means that conflict is the basic pattern of social behavior. Individuals, families, and states exist in a condition of ceaseless tension and war. Civil society produces two qualitatively different kinds of conflict, corrupt and ordered. Corrupt conflict is the struggle among men for aggrandizement and domination without respect for the authority of law, religion, and age, and without concern for the common good. In the corrupt civil society, one dominated by corrupt conflict, economic avarice is the common mode of behavior, and sensual gratification by means of the money wrested in the social contest is the common goal. Politically speaking, corruption means factionalism, violence, conspiracy; in republics, an alternation between anarchy and tyrannical rule. Ordered conflict takes place within a framework of law, and is always subordinate to the common good, never erupting into violence and civil war. Religious belief prevails in the good society; parents and elders are esteemed and respected. Citizens generally fulfill their civic duties and obligations. Honesty is the rule in private and public affairs. Men are not judged upon the basis of their wealth--economic ends are the least esteemed--but by their dedication to the community.

How closely related do you think Project Management and Software Engineering are - if at all?|web2pm|2007-10-29

How do we know when an issue is resolved? This may sound like a trick question. The answer is simple. We know an issue is resolved when the problem, question, bug, or open activity has been solved, answered, fixed or completed according to a clear requirement or as I like to think of it “a check off criteria”. Without a requirement or some kind of goal or end deliverable for each and every open issue we may not move forward toward or “check off” the open issue to any kind of acceptable resolution. For example, I recently asked one of my developers about her progress on fixing a crash in our pre-release software application. She said she would know better after she finished testing for robustness. I said what measure of robustness are we using? How do we know when we have it robust enough? (It seemed to me that we had solved the robustness issue for practical purpose and were ready to move on). “Well”, she said, “in over 1000 invocations of this particular module that may have had a memory leakage, it had not crashed”. Thinking that our typical user in the typical environment would likely never even get close to 1000 successive invocations without an intervening computer system restart, or boot, as it were, it was my intuitively technical opinion that we had resolved the issue. Had I specified that condition up front we would have avoided hashing out the "are we done yet" scenario and known we satisfied a requirement for resolution (no crashes in > 100 cycles or similar). Without the up front specification of a check off condition, we can avoid guesswork as to when we can “check off” a particular issue.|AskaGuide|2007-10-16

v-harry and CM, I agree that corporate America has major managerial problems up and down the supervisory to C-0 ladder. The misfortune of those choosing the wrong job with the wrong company is more than offset by companies choosing the wrong (under or mis-qualified) person for the managerial job.|CharlesW|2007-8-3

v-harry, thanks for the compliment, but I am not a doctor of anything ... yet. I almost hesitate to answer your question on some kind of fifth amendment analogy grounds. The answer is: we need more PMPs in corporate America! Get certified! Thanks for the question. - CM|AskaGuide|2007-8-3

Dr. Munyan, don't you think that what often passes for management in corporations is almost so un-surprising and disappointing as to be bane, at the very least?|visionharry|2007-8-3

Team building is more than simply planning an outing to play arcade games together. It is more a marathon than a sprint. Team business involves continuous attention to the team. One of the greatest team builders was Joe McCarthy, one of the greatest baseball managers of all time, still holding the best managerial winning percentage .615. Check out the multitude of stories on him and his managerial style that proliferate the WWW. He knew how to get the best out of his team (NY Yankees). |AskaGuide|2007-8-2

Software engineering in perhaps the broadest sense, applies engineering principles and methods of design to the development and production of larger applications, concerning itself with both the technical aspects of building software systems, AND management issues, such as directing programming teams, scheduling, and budgeting. - CM|AskaGuide|2007-7-19
